As the January 19, 2025, deadline approaches for TikTok's potential ban or forced sale in the United States, the company is actively reassuring its U.S. workforce of their job security. In an internal memo, TikTok emphasized that U.S. employees' employment, compensation, and benefits will remain intact, and offices will continue operations regardless of the impending decision.

The Supreme Court is currently deliberating on a law enacted in April 2024 that mandates ByteDance, TikTok's China-based parent company, to either divest from TikTok or face a U.S. ban due to national security concerns. During recent hearings, the Court appeared inclined to uphold the law, despite appeals from President-elect Donald Trump and various lawmakers to extend the deadline.

President-elect Trump, who has expressed a favorable view of TikTok, suggesting a "warm spot" for the platform, is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025, just a day after the deadline. He has indicated a desire to seek a "political resolution" to the issue upon taking office.

In the memo, TikTok's leadership stated, "The bill is not written in a way that impacts the entities through which you are employed, only the U.S. user experience." They assured employees of their commitment to navigating the situation to protect both staff and the platform's more than 170 million U.S. users.

If the Supreme Court does not block the law by January 19, new downloads of TikTok from Apple or Google app stores would be prohibited. Existing users could continue to access the app temporarily; however, the platform's services may degrade over time and eventually cease, as other companies would be barred from providing support to TikTok.

TikTok's leadership remains focused on planning for various scenarios to ensure the well-being of its employees and the continuity of its services amid the legal uncertainties.
